Few new trails we were hiking on

The end of March brought much better weather, for weekends at least, which is the most important for us. Working during week leaves us no choice but to go hiking on Saturdays.

For last three weeks we went on three different places. I am glad about that. Since November 2012, we went to 5 new trails and only one old and this is a trend I would like to continue during this year and those who are about to come. There are so many things to see in BC, I am afraid that a life time isn't long enough 😛

First one was on Bowen Island. It is another place "around a corner" as I like to say and easy accessible by car and ferry. What we did not expect is a snow on top of Mt Gardner which was our goal for that day. Mt Gardner could barely be called mountain. Only 719m above sea level, it is island's highest peak. There are actually two peaks – north and south summit – and our hiking started along the southern Skid Trail.

Not too hard and only partially steep trail, gave the impression that entire "adventure" would be an easy walk, just to gain mileage and endurance for future. Then, after some steep climbing we reached South summit – and got lost…

Nothing much to see up there, but that is the point. During winter island was, obviously, having some severe storms and most of the trees were broken, laying around under layer of melting snow. And trail… there was no trail at all, no one has been there since the last snow and we didn't have nothing to refer to. We weren't lost for real, according to map, the other side of trail was no more than 50m away but breaking the leg was not an option for us :left: So we zig-zagged for about half an hour until we heard some dogs barking. Followed that and found trail soon.

A view from a North Summit was stunning…

North Shore mountains and Vancouver on the right 😀
We returned along the north side of the island and except for a beginning (a lot of melting snow) the rest of trail was one of the most boring ones we've ever seen 😛

Two days ago we were visiting a friend in Sunshine Coast, area north-west from Vancouver. It will be nice to go to Terahedron Provincial Park, but right now there is a lot of snow there and we are not prepared for that kind of hike. Soon, a lot of trails will be closed anyway, snow will be melting and trails will be dangerous.

We decided to stay on a low ground and first we went to Cliff Gilker Park (about 3.5km) and then to Triangle Lake trail (6.6km overall).

Clif Gilker park is nice but it's only a park – no strenuous trails and tricky climbs.

Triangle lake trail is longer and more like other south BC trails. No snow but a bit cold wind from a coast despite the forest. Not much of a lake at the end but we were glad to be there 😛

Until the next adventure, stay well 😀

Looks like our local Mt. Hood / Mt. Ranier woods.

  5. gdare says:

Abbacus, it's the same kind of rain forest :)Btw, where did you make that cougar on the telephone pole photo? 😎

  6. rose-marie says:

Looks like a nice hike  Do you go every Saturday?

  7. Spaggyj says:

Wow. Everything I see here is so pretty. I knew Canada was beautiful but seriously…

  8. gdare says:

Rose, yes, every Saturday except when it's raining. During summer it will be for a whole weekend, every weekend (hopefully  ) :DKimmie, I've never been in other parts of Canada (except Toronto airport 😀 )so I can't compare. But one day I will for sure – Newfoundland and Labrador as well as Nova Scotia and Quebec look tempting

  11. SittingFox says:

Looks like you had a good time! Love the tall trees, and the view is a good reward for getting up the hill without breaking an ankle :p

  12. gdare says:

It feels funny now but back then, I would step on "solid" snow and suddenly find my leg over the knee level deep among fallen trees :left:Thanks, I like that one with trees, too 😀

  13. sanshan says:

I got a nice bruise from stepping through the snow and hitting my lower leg. Bruise on the front and back. I was lucky.

  14. derWandersmann says:

Old woodsman's maxim: "Never step on anything you can step over; never step over anything you can walk around."

  15. sanshan says:

There was little choice. All options had risks.

That's one way of orienteering 😆

  17. derWandersmann says:

Yep; if you're going to the dogs …

  18. gdare says:

Sami & dW, we would find our way but it was just a help out of nowhere 😀

  19. derWandersmann says:

    😀

  20. thaodp says:

So impressed. No need to mention that how jealous I am now seeing those beautiful pictures

  21. thaodp says:

It's on my to-do list. In the meantime, I'll enjoy adventures you and San give here 😀

  22. gdare says:

Thanks Mit 😀 How about a new posts about Vietnam and its magnificent mountains and beaches?

  23. gdare says:

    Ok 😉

  24. Words says:

Some great shots in the album! And such wonderful blue skies. I could weep! 😥

  25. mrandmrsbard says:

That is a beautiful area, makes me sorry I didn't immigrate there back in the 60's, when it was popular. :dragonfly:

  26. gdare says:

Words, not blue at the moment, but grey and rainy. Snow in the back country :left:Doug & Judy, it is still popular 😉

  27. Dacotah says:

What a peaceful and beautiful place to hike. Great photos as always.

  28. raniakasim says:

life is so short, so enjoy ur time as much as u can .

  29. gdare says:

Carol, thanks :DRania, I am glad to see you are ok. How are you doing?

  30. Dacotah says:

    You are welcome Darko. 😀

  31. raniakasim says:

thanks Darko , so happy that am still on ur friend list after long absence , actually i said to myself maybe most of my friend here thohght am dead , maybe they forgot me, any way am still alive dreaming with better life .thanks again .

  32. gdare says:

I bet no one (here in Opera Community) has forgotten you. Reading all the news about Syria, I was wondering how are you doing, and I am glad you are ok. Don't worry, a good life is waiting for you, there is always sun after rain. I know it is easy for me to say now, but I was living in similar situation (not severe as in Syria, though) for a long time and then life just opened for me. Hope to see some better news from your country soon.

  33. raniakasim says:

what i should say , tell me because i don't find suitable words to thanks you , you don't know how much I need this dose of emboldening .

  34. derWandersmann says:

And it's beginning to look as though the USA, Britain, and, perhaps, France may decide to take a hand in the matter.

  35. gdare says:

Rania, you don't have to thank me, I know you would say the same if it was other way around :up:dW, I don't think that would be a good idea. Look at Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Tunisia… Did they solve anything? No, they just made things worse.

  36. derWandersmann says:

Since when has that mattered? This is politics.

  37. derWandersmann says:

    Yep. We're famous for it.

  38. gdare says:

Except that that kind of politics affects human lives. In a worst way.

  39. MirabelaTM says:

The last picture is really stunning

  40. gdare says:

    Thanks, Mira
