Lightning over Belgrade last night

It was around 21:30 when it started. Whole day was warm and humid, sticky, as we usually say here. Typical June in Serbia. And rain almost every evening.
When I was coming home from training it was obvious a storm was approaching – air was still but stars and moon were covered with heavy clouds and flashes of light appeared here and there. Suddenly, a wind, strong and reffreshing, felt so fine on a warm body, started to wave crowns of trees and sound of thunder shook the silence. I hurried home even though I was tempted to stay out for a while and feel first drops that came a minute later.

It lasted nearly whole night…

Same here. Today we had also hail.

  2. Dacotah says:

Great photos, thanks for the link.I don't care for hot humid weather. Like the rain though. πŸ™‚

  3. thaodp says:

Great photos indeed, though it would have scared me a lot if I had been there :insane:

  4. sanshan says:

Not bad with your little camera.

  5. risis1977 says:

Wow :eyes: the lights so beautiful . .:up:Nice shot . .

  6. sanshan says:

    Whoops, didn't see that link.

  7. gdare says:

Lorenzo, I know it must be similar, when I see satellite image of southern Europe, it all looks the same :DCarol, I preffer hot weather over winter and those storms just add more to the beauty of summer :up:Mit, scare you? A brave Vietnamese girl like you? No way :PSan, my little camera is not THAT good :left:Risis, I like that street lights could be seen as well as lightning. And no, it was not my shot πŸ˜€

We had cloud bursts yesterday. It's what they call it when it rains as hard as possible. That is 15 mm of rain within 30 minutes of time. You'll be soaked in ten seconds, if you aren't dressed in plastic. Lightning too. It lasted only 20 minutes or so, but enough for some roads to flood.

  9. Stardancer says:

Wish we could get just a bit of refreshing rain. Temps have been right around 100 deg. F. for the last couple of weeks, with high humidity driving the heat index up to around 105-110 deg. F. Feels like late July, early August.Been kind of crazy weather this year.:eyes:

It's funny how many really good shots of lightning look a little fake. I think it's because it's so bright. I love storms

  12. Aqualion says:

A thunder storm over land is nothing compared to a thunder storm over sea. I did some sailing with an old topsail schooner a couple of summers some ten years ago. If a thunder storm creeps up on a ship in open water, there is nothing to do but to get all sails down and just wait for it to blow away, praying the waves will stay calm. You have lightning everywhere, all around you at any times as long as it lasts. Pretty awesome, but also scary as Hell. I have some pictures of it somewhere.

  13. CultureSurfer says:

    Awesome pic!

  14. edwardpiercy says:

Wow, great photos that Marko did. Best lightening photos I've ever seen. They look like big tree branches. You know it hardly ever thunderstorms here. Don't know why. Thanks for the link.

San πŸ˜‰ Martin, I remember travelling from Split to Hvar (in Adriatic sea) when I was about 6 I think. Suddenly we got caught by a huge thunderstorm with big waves – well, I was six so it must have been looking huge to me πŸ˜† I couldn`t believe how much… liquid… a group of kids could vomit :yuck:  I am sorry but I just needed to share this story with all of you :lol:Star, I have seen on the news that USA are under the heat wave. First tornadoes now heat. Is it usual in middle west?Kimmie, now I love them too. But first I needed to be afraid of them, then go through some kind of initiation. Now I just love them :DNaomi, yes, a great one. I would like to have that kind of camera one day :DOriginally posted by edwardpiercy:

Ed, hmmm this is strange :left: I wonder what could be a reason?

Ain't nothin' usual in the Midwest anymore, Darko.:yikes::lol:Seriously, there have been a lot of really strange weather events lately. Last night, there was rare heat burst in Wichita, Kansas. After midnight, the temperature went from about 85 degrees F. to over 100 degrees in about fifteen minutes. It lasted until around 3 in the morning. This was in the dead of night. First time I've ever heard of anything like that.Just crazy.:eyes:

Thunder storms are amazing, especially the more violent ones. I even enjoy a good Nor'easter, too, as long as I am nice and safe indoors :)We had a tornadoe in the Western part of our state last week. We never get those here. It did so much damage, and to make matters most, the police are trying to deal with a bunch of jerks that are plungering what is left of people's homes. You'd think everyone would come together to help each other.

  20. rose-marie says:

We had the same weather, too. I was actually on a day-trip (or 24-hour trip more like it) Oslo/Copenhagen/MalmΓΆ/Copenhagen/Oslo and when I reached MalmΓΆ, the sky just opened up. Lightning was everywhere and it was the kind of rain that just drenches you right into the bone, no matter how fast you run.I don't care for it much, but lightning can be pretty awesome! Especially when there's no thunder to go with it.

  21. gdare says:

Mags, in which state do you live? I am sorry to hear about thieves; unfortunately someone thinks this is a great opportunity to do some "research" insted of helping their neighbours who probably lost everything :irked:Rose, now there is one old dilemma: would you end up wet more if you just walked in the rain insted of running? Some people think there is no difference… :sherlock:Originally posted by rose-marie:

Did you go to Copenhagen by plane or boat?

  22. Words says:

Wow! That photo is stunning. It sounds like a wild night.

:sherlock: If we did some serious Googling and did some backtracking, we could possibly arrive at a plausible cause. Sooo, let's engage in some process of elimination. By any chance, did Julia Roberts arrive in Wichita, Kansas right around at midnight? Cuz that WOULD account for such a rapid temperature increase.

WOW! amazing picture! that still before a storm is so cool. and the air you described so wonderful. you mention much rain, but is lightening like this typical in June also? it was 9 years ago when we moved municipalities that we encountered tons of lightening during June and beyond… some amazing light shows! I was holding my youngest who was a baby at the time in my arms before bed, rocking her and BAM! one struck very close to the window, I could see it go toward the ground- never seen such a thing! or felt!

  25. gdare says:

    Bryan, yes, it is

  26. gdare says:

Words, it was like this almost whole night :DCarlos :lol:Jill, it is amazing as long as it don`t hit at your house :left:

    Great Picture!

I live in historical Massachusetts. Home to Paul Revere, John Adams, Sam Adams, Ben Franklin. Ever hear of them? The Tornadoe touch down in Springfield, MA

  29. Aqualion says:

I've heard about John, Paul, George and Ringo… But that's not the same, I suppose…

Boat would take too long for a day's meeting. Trains unfortuantely don't go neither direct nor fast enough, so plane it was.

  31. gdare says:

Mags, Sam Adams "Take pride in your beer" and Ben Franklin ring the bell. For the rest of them I would need to use Google πŸ˜€ Also, I know about Springfield, a place where basketball was invented :up:Martin, not the same Paul, I guess :lol:Rose, I love planes. Actually, I love airports, but I think you already know that πŸ˜€

*breathes* ooooooooh! I wish I could have experienced that, it sounds amazing, and that picture is spectacular! Love a good storm!

  34. gdare says:

Jen, my friend told me at one point it felt like a lightning was in his appartment :left:Sal, gives a feeling of refreshing energy, right? πŸ˜€

  35. SittingFox says:

That is an awesome photo :eyes:Strange weather here too. I've twice heard thunder while out walking, and made a hasty retreat home. Once was from some distant clouds, but on the other occasion the sky really didn't look too bad :confused:I don't like humidity though.

  36. Shalalala says:

I had lightning strike my apt building once. Blew all the pictures off the walls and fried everything electric. Everything. *frowns* Stupid renter's insurance didn't cover "acts of God" :irked: Still  lightning tho!!

  37. gdare says:

Adele, I don`t think sky needs to be particularly bad for lightning to appear :left:Jen, yes, those small prints :irked:

well, a couple years later, another storm felled a tree and smashed our car! but, you maybe already knew that as I've told this story before – gladly, know one was hurt!, this car was in need of repair and it left unscathed our other usable vehicle- and totally missing our garage! we were glad about that.

  39. AnitaMargita says:

Oh, I remember that day… and storm… It was just like you described. Btw, have a very happy birthday! :hat:Let all your wishes come true!

In Denmark we have this saying that if you have been a good boy you will have good weather on your birthday. So, how was your weather yesterday?

  47. gdare says:

On 15th of June, actually. It was sunny, hot, humid. I hope this counts as me being a good boy last year πŸ˜€

  48. Aqualion says:

Sure… I knew about the date. Just forgot what date it was today. Typical. Sometimes I have to check my phone to find out what day of the week it is. It's always been like that. I believe absentminded is the term. Not absinthminded… That is something entirely different but somehow similar even so…
