Short Definition of Balkan

An e-mail I got from one of my friends. A brief history of Balkan countries 😛

Balkan is a scene where Romans whacked Avars, then later Avars and Slavs whacked them, then Slavs whacked Celts and Avars, then ended up whacked by Turks, Hungarians and Bulgarians, who also whacked each other, so at the end Turks got whacked and it remained to Slavs to fight with Hungarians and Bulgarians, who were helped by Austrians helped by Germans, who didn`t get enough once but they came again for more whacking so, at the end, when there were no one to whack, Slavs started to whack each other :knight:

Pretty accurate, I might say. Although, Illyrian tribes were not mentioned; but then again, most of the time they were just observing what is going on, waiting for their moment to got some whacking and then to whack back, helped by overseas allies who already has a history of whacking all over the world 😛

A picture from Wikipedia. Ethnic composition map of the Balkans by A. Synvet of 1877, a French professor of the Ottoman Lyceum of Constantinople. You can tell it is not easy to understand, right? 😀

Right ! :ko:it is hard to understand :faint:

  2. LorenzoCelsi says:

Not more complicated than history of Europe as a whole or history of my own country, Italy. You don't impress me much. :)Of course it is quantum physics for people whose knowledge of history is maybe the latest 200-150 years. :)BTW to define Italy is not easier than Balkans. Think of the language, we have: italic, greek, latin, celt, german (in multiple dialects), arab, albanian, slavic, french, spanish, catalan, and today english.

  3. There2ia says:

    :faint: 😆

  4. qlue says:

It all makes perfect sense if you look here first!.

  5. sanshan says:

This makes total sense to me.

  6. fammcdon says:

    😆 Good stuff, Dare!

  7. gdare says:

Risis, all you need is to read carefully :PLorenzo, I bet every part of the world can make its own short whacking history :DTeresia :DAadil, lots of oranges there 😆 :chef:Bud, thanks :DSan, I knew you would understand 😉

  8. Dacotah says:

:faint:Do you have a link to the page with the map?

  9. gdare says:

Carol, here is the link to the full resolution map 🙂http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Balkans-ethnic_(1877).jpgAngeliki, short but very informative 😛

  10. ellinidata says:

thanks for the very informative and enjoyable post,I knew some of it but I was delighted to read more…

  11. spooksister says:

It makes just as much sense as a game of whackamole 🙂

  12. sanshan says:

It's a lot like that zombie game I'm playing. Those darn zombies always finding new ways to get in your house and eat your brains. You gotta whack them before they do that. Makes total sense.

  13. Suntana says:

Whew! For a couple of tense moments there, I was afraid the USA was gonna be left out of the Whack Fest. 😆

  14. studio41 says:

indeed a LOT of whacking! great map!

  15. gdare says:

Sal, I needed to google that to understand what are you talking about 😀 Did you know that Wikipedia has article about that?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whac-A-MoleSan, I guess it could be compared, yes 😀 Only it plays during centuries not in the pause of making chicken pepper curry and vacuuming 😛 Not that I have anything against chicken pepper curry :chef:Carlos, USA is somehow always around 😛 Can you believe that some countries avoided Whack Fest for quite a time now. Switzerland and Sweden, for instance. While their neighbours had a lot of whacking they remained neutral. Maybe it has to do with fact that both names of countries start with "sw". My country could be called Swerbia so we could have a break for a while… :(Jill, thanks 😀

  16. L2D2 says:

Whole lotta whackin' goin' on! And it's still going on. Don't guess it will ever stop. Weird how today's allies are tomorrow's enemies.I did understand that—-sort of.

  17. raniakasim says:

short definition of Balkan :yikes: , thanks god that Darko didn't write elongated one

  18. gdare says:

Linda, Balkan was always turbulent place so I can`t see it will be different in a future… :DRania, in that case I would go to library and make a list of books 😀

  19. L2D2 says:

Like the Middle East has always and will always be a hotbed of chaos and war.

  20. thetomster says:

 the shortest form of European history: WHACKING EACH OTHER ::pirate: … as long as it gets … and it's not so different from other parts of this world

  21. SittingFox says:

Okay, I will try to remember that but I don't think I could say it with one breath :insane:

  22. gdare says:

Linda, exactly, it seems that some parts of the world live for whacking :insane:Adele, I can't, too :faint:Dirk 😆

  23. qlue says:

That's usually called 'whacking off'.

  24. sanshan says:

Canadians do a bit of whacking but we always apologize or hold an enquiry about the whacking. A bit of self whacking.

  25. sanshan says:

    :right:

  26. Suntana says:

Darko, that Short Definition of Balkan pretty much described Message Boards. :insane: I sure recall them like that.I'll never forget the time that apparently this woman had been secretly lurking on our Board. She then meant to go back to HER Home Board and drag our Home Board through the mud behind our back. The trouble was, in her eagerness to go gossip about us, she forgot where she was. She lost track that she was still on our Board. So, when she spilled her guts out with all the juicy gossip … it happened to be dead smack in front of us as if up on a freakin' cinema screen. :insane: A small Nuclear Board War then ensued.

  27. qlue says:

    Sounds like Havaard's blog..

  28. Suntana says:

Oh REALLY? :eyes: Any particular Posts I should check out? Isn't his Blog … Opera, MyOpera and technology-based? You mean Geeks are also capable of mudslinging, flaming and wreaking havoc in general? :insane:

  29. Suntana says:

I'll see if I can find it.I guess as they say …A Comment is a Comment. And — There is no such thing as Bad Press. As long as he has the traffic, he's probably going, "YES!"

  30. qlue says:

Most of his technology posts become such intense flame-wars that I unsubscribe from them..Check out the posts concerning the h264 vs Theora video codecs for good examples. :p.

  31. Suntana says:

I went and checked. If I was on the correct Post, I did see someone tell someone else to stop Trolling and quit constantly undermining the discussions. :insane: But, no foul language. Darn it.

  32. gdare says:

San, so Canadians whack the hell out of someone then apologize? :left: I guess if this is from the bottom of the heart, then apology is accepted… :left:Carlos, I remember that story from that Message Board  😆

  33. edwardpiercy says:

😆 :yes:One of the most concise histories I've ever read. :DI was going to say the same as Linda — that's a whole lot of whacking going on. Some say that the Greeks (Mycenaeans) got far enough north in the early days to have done some whacking (or at least trading) in the Balkans via the Vardar-Moreva river system.

  34. qlue says:

Well, Chuck, to a FOSS addict, any propriety software or codec is foul language when talking about standards!.

  35. edwardpiercy says:

Yes, my sister is now reading a book on Alexander the Gay. Who whacked across half the world before he finished wacking.

  36. gdare says:

    😆

  37. gdare says:

Ed, in old days, Greeks were the biggest whackers in the area 😆
