by Bobby Sands
In the middle of the sleeping lake
The Lonesome boatman dwells,
Around him rise the bracken hills
The dreamy glens and dells.
The skies are red and rolling
Tinted in the twilight's velvet hue
The ragged scarecrow peers in relief
To where the crackling crows have flown.
The lonesome boatman doesn't move
His clothes are old and worn
Oh, lonesome boatman reveal to me why,
Why you look forlorn.
Is it life's sorrows
Or a forgotten memory that you have found
Or do you listen to the wind
For the boatmen you've seen drown?
Oh, lonesome boatman, there's a gleaming star
High above your head.
The waters glisten in the dusk
Are they tears that you have shed?
Oh, lonesome boatman, the birds are here,
The morning shadows fall.
Oh, friends, why must you be
But a dying shadow on my lonely cell wall.

Wow, Darko. That was really special. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ana. Glad you liked it 🙂
IRA activist? :left: I see..
Very thought-provoking.
😆 😀
Wow. Didn't realise the guy was made MP! Can't say I feel for him, but no wonder he was left so sad and lonely.
Carol, don`t be :awww: I like Irish drinking songs, most of them are sad and happy and dancing :DKimmie, here is a link if you like to know more about himhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Sands
Carol, :cheers:Kimmie, exactly what I thought. I am not much into poems, especially if they are in foreign language (I got easilly lost) but liked this one 🙂
The picture painted was so vivid. I like that. 🙂
:awww:
Star, you are welcome :)Kimmie, the poem was written by Bobby Sands, a 27 years old IRA activist who died in 1981. after 66 days of hunger strike. I am not so inerested in his political acitivities but found both a song and poem very nice. They share sadness and loneliness.
😀
🙂
I really enjoyed that! Thanks for sharing!!!
That`s much better 😀
Thanks for the education, Dark. :sst: you underestimate your grasp of the english language. You're amazingly good.
Beautiful but sad poem and that flute had such a haunting sound to it.
The guy's already preparing himself for martyrdom with this poem.
very nice song
Thank you, all. I was listening a cd I`ve bought few years ago, band is called Cruiskeen and they held a concert in some pub in Ireland. One of the songs was The Lonesome Boatman. Googling about it I have found this poem and a story about Bobby Sands.Kimmie, thank you, I am trying hard 🙂
😦 shame that a brain like his,is not around any longer!a heart felt poem Darko, thaanks for sharing !
You are welcome, Angeliki 🙂

Hi Marike, long time no see 😀
Yeah, been busy at work and my mom was sick. She's much better now and work has slowed down 🙂 How you been?
I don`t have too much to work in office but spend most of the evenings at home because my grandma is not doing well. She is old and… well, you know.It was a bit slow here in My Opera but I expect it to run faster soon
I kinda do know. I had to look after my step dad while my mom was sick and he's old too. I saw many people were away for sometime but are comming back slowly. I'm thinking of a new post but can only think music right now. It always bring memories (good and bad) I've been listening to Def Leppard – love bites alot these last few days.
Now that's a classic. Kim and I piss ourselves laughing at the lyrics to that.
Look up Love Bites lyrics and tell us if you think the writer has ever had sex before. 😆
Marike, music post is a nice excuse for being lazy to write something else. But it feels so good :happy:Mik, to lyrics of Def Leppard? I am not sure I know any of their songs….
*snickers*
Hi..minenow..:D
Hello Risis. 😮
Mik, you mean in this part?"I don't wanna touch you too much baby 'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy"Well, it looks as if he was bored when he made that song 😀
Every part of it. 😆
😆
*gives the cute kitty a cookie* Cheer up sweetie. 😉 I have their greatest hits! There are a lot of good bands with hits from the era of our youth, where the lyrics are kinda goofy if they stand alone.
😥 you all making fun of my teenage memories.. :awww: *goes and sits in the corner*
It is rare that there are both lyrics and music in a perfect simbiosis.I like songs where you can listen a whole story along with nice music.Like this one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fT8jL0uk5M
Here's another, one of my favorites.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0DqPSF2fyo🙂
It is Irish 😀
I think the lonesome boatman needs Prozac. :pNice song, hmmm, sounds rather Irish. 😀
